Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to reach 900 top-level career goals as Portugal opened their Nations League campaign with a win over Croatia.

The 39-year-old scored in the 34th minute, volleying in from the edge of the six-yard box after a cross from Nuno Mendes, doubling Portugal’s lead.

This marked his 131st goal for Portugal, extending his record, 20 years after scoring his first for the national team. The veteran striker sank to his knees in an emotional celebration.

Earlier, Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot gave Portugal an early lead, but later scored an own goal as Croatia pulled one back before halftime.

Ronaldo’s goals have spanned his time with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and most recently, Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Following the opening game, Portugal are tied for points at the top of League A Group 1 with Poland, who defeated Scotland on Thursday.
