Russia 2018: Rohr’s discipline will take us far – Mikel
Super Eagles Skipper, Mikel Obi, has said Coach Gernot Rohr’s radical style will take the team far at the World Cup when the competition commences.
He described the current squad as the best he has played with adding that since he joined the national team in 2005 he has not seen the kind of discipline the Franco-German has introduced in the squad. “I have been in the national team since 2005 and I haven’t seen this discipline before.
It is meetings, being on time and then training. “Sometimes a player has the belief because he knows he is not going to make the team, he just strolls around. Now, you have to train properly. If you don’t, you are leaving the camp.
The coach has changed the whole mentality,” he told the Guardian Sport in London. Mikel is the captain of Nigeria’s senior national team and will guide a young team to the FIFA 2018 World Cup thanks to German Manager, Gernot Rohr, who helped transformed the team through his “radical” style.
The tournament in Russia will be the second World Cup appearance for Mikel and the former Chelsea midfielder believes the team has the right mental attitude to exceed expectations.
“The coach and myself, as captain, have tried to make these young players realise that we are a team, not individuals,” Mikel says. “If you don’t want to play together, you are welcome to leave. It’s amazing now to go to camp. The good feelings are obvious,” he added.
