Rutter’s last-minute equaliser denies West Ham escape from relegation zone

Brighton forward Georginio Rutter struck a stoppage-time equaliser on Sunday to prevent West Ham from moving out of the Premier League relegation zone in a tense 1–1 draw.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were seconds away from climbing out of the bottom three after Jarrod Bowen scored in the second half at the Amex Stadium.

But Rutter’s late finish ensured Brighton claimed a point, keeping West Ham in 18th place, two points adrift of Nottingham Forest just above the drop.

Although the late concession was a bitter setback, West Ham’s gritty performance — coming on the heels of their 1–1 draw at Manchester United on Thursday — highlighted their progress under Nuno, who replaced Graham Potter in September. The Hammers have now suffered only one defeat in six league outings as they try to engineer a survival turnaround.

Brighton, meanwhile, were looking to respond after squandering a two-goal advantage in their 4–3 loss to Aston Villa, a defeat that snapped their 10-game unbeaten home run. Securing a draw kept the seventh-placed side firmly in contention for a European spot.

On a rain-soaked south coast, both sides battled difficult conditions. Lucas Paquetá returned to West Ham’s starting lineup after serving a ban for dissent against Liverpool. The Brazilian insisted his actions stemmed from frustration during a spot-fixing investigation opened by the FA in 2024, which concluded this summer with his exoneration.

Paquetá almost opened the scoring with a fierce strike saved by Bart Verbruggen, who also produced a superb double stop after the interval to deny Bowen and Crysencio Summerville.

West Ham finally edged ahead in the 73rd minute when Jan Paul van Hecke’s poor back-header gifted possession to Callum Wilson, who teed up Bowen to guide a low shot past Verbruggen from a tight angle.

Brighton pressed relentlessly late on and were rewarded deep into added time. After Alphonse Areola made two saves in a goalmouth scramble, Rutter reacted quickest to slot home from close range.

In Sunday’s other fixture, FA Cup holders Crystal Palace can rise to fourth place if they defeat Fulham.
