Sarri resigns as Lazio manager

The manager of Lazio, Maurizio Sarri, has stepped down from his position following the team’s fifth loss in six matches across all competitions.

On Monday, Lazio suffered a 2-1 defeat at home against Udinese, leaving them in ninth place in Serie A and trailing by seven points for the final European qualification spot. Last week, they were eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

Maurizio Sarri, aged 65, tendered his resignation after this recent string of results. He had joined Lazio in 2021 and guided them to a second-place finish in Serie A last season, marking their highest league position since their title win in the 1999-2000 season.

In the interim, assistant manager Giovanni Martusciello will assume command. Lazio’s upcoming fixtures include an away match against Frosinone, currently third-bottom in the league.

Additionally, they are scheduled to face Juventus in the Italian Cup semi-finals next month.

Sarri’s coaching career includes a successful tenure at Chelsea in the 2018-19 season, where he secured the Europa League title, finished third in the Premier League, and reached the Carabao Cup final.

Prior to Chelsea, he achieved notable success at Napoli, leading them to two second-place finishes in Serie A and earning the title of Serie A Manager of the Year in 2016-17. He also clinched the Serie A title with Juventus in 2019-20.
