Scarlett late goal earns Oxford draw with West Brom

Dane Scarlett scored in stoppage time to secure a point for Oxford United against West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

Karlan Grant opened the scoring for the visiting Baggies with a first-half strike, stunning the home crowd with a powerful shot from outside the box.

The U’s pushed for an equalizer, forcing Albion deeper into their own half in the later stages of the second half, before Scarlett finally headed in from a well-executed long throw routine.

Oxford’s impressive home form continues, as they remain unbeaten at the Kassam Stadium this season following their promotion last term.

West Brom could have taken the top spot with a win but now sit fifth after conceding late in the match.

The first significant chance came in the sixth minute for Oxford’s Mark Harris, who broke through the Albion defense but took a heavy touch, allowing Baggies keeper Alex Palmer to comfortably deflect the ball behind for a corner.

A number of West Brom’s early opportunities came from set pieces, and they had a decent spell after 20 minutes, with several close attempts, most notably Torbjorn Heggem’s header that narrowly went over the bar from a corner.

The Baggies took the lead just before the 30-minute mark when Grant received the ball in space just outside the box, set himself, and sent a low shot into the bottom left corner, hitting the post on the way in.

Oxford nearly responded perfectly when Ciaron Brown headed a corner just after, but his attempt sailed over the bar.

As a result, the home side went into the break trailing at the Kassam Stadium for the first time this Championship campaign.

The second half began as a much more open affair, with both teams finding joy in going forward and creating chances in front of goal.

All the supporters in the ground rose to their feet when Harris suddenly broke through on goal, using his body to evade a Baggies defender and sprint away.

However, referee Leigh Doughty halted play, ruling that Harris had used illegal contact, prompting Oxford boss Des Buckingham to receive a booking for expressing his frustrations.

U’s substitute Louie Sibley made a strong challenge on Alex Mowatt just before the 80-minute mark, wrapping his legs around the midfielder at pace and high on his leg, but he was only shown a yellow card despite calls from Albion players for a harsher penalty.

In the final moments of the match, Oxford pushed the West Brom defense deeper into their half and applied considerable pressure.

During five minutes of added time, the U’s executed a well-worked long throw routine from Will Vaulks. His launched ball was flicked onto the head of Scarlett, who glanced it into the net to score his first goal for the club.
