Serena Williams has been fined $17,000 for three violations during her defeat to Naomi Osaka in a stormy US Open final on Saturday.

Osaka won 6-2, 6-4 to prevent Williams from winning a record-tying 24th major singles title.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion could not hold back her tears during an argument with chair umpire Carlos Ramos after being given two warnings.

An infuriated Williams went on to call Ramos a thief, demanding an apology from the 47-year-old umpire, after Osaka had established her dominance.

And after the heated occasion, spectators booed Ramos, who was escorted off the court.
