Sevilla’s Berizzo returns after cancer operation

Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo is expected to return to the dugout for Friday’s match at home to Levante, less than three weeks after undergoing an operation on a cancerous prostate tumour.

“The Sevilla manager surprised his players by showing up in the changing room to give a team-talk and then work on tactics with the squad,” the Spanish club said on their website on Friday.

Berizzo, 48, also joined the team on their trip to a hotel for final preparations ahead of the Spanish league game, although his involvement at the Sanchez Pizjuan will “depend on his progress throughout the day”, Sevilla added.

Assistant coach Ernesto Marcucci oversaw wins against Cartagena in the Copa del Rey and Deportiva La Coruna while leading Sevilla into the Champions League last 16 as Berizzo was recovering from an operation on November 28.

But the Argentine’s return comes at a welcome time for Sevilla, who are fifth in La Liga following last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing by Real Madrid.
