Southampton have signed defender Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough United for a reported £3m on a four-year deal.

The 21-year-old made 45 appearances in League One last season, helping Peterborough win the EFL Trophy against Bristol City at Wembley and reach the play-offs.

Edwards, who captained England Under-20s, will play his first season in the Premier League, having also featured in the Championship for Peterborough.

“I’m buzzing to be here. It’s a massive club and I can’t wait to get started,” Edwards said.

“Obviously from what happened last year they had an unbelievable season. The manager (Russell Martin) seems like he’s got a great bunch of lads and they’ve got a real togetherness, and the style of play Southampton plays suits me the best.

“I’m excited to get going. It’s a dream come true for anyone, so I’ve got to be excited and obviously looking forward to it.”

Saints, who defeated Leeds United in the Championship play-off final last season, have already signed Adam Lallana and Charlie Taylor on free transfers from Brighton and Burnley respectively. Additionally, Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ loan from Manchester City became permanent following their promotion.
