Southampton defender Jack Stephens has been handed an additional two-match suspension following his red card against Manchester United.
The 30-year-old centre-back received a straight red card for a high challenge on Alejandro Garnacho during Southampton’s 3-0 defeat on 14 September.
Following the incident, Stephens was charged by the FA for breaching Rule E3(1), which addresses improper conduct, for using abusive and insulting language toward referee Stuart Attwell and fourth official Gavin Ward.
In addition to the two-match suspension, Stephens has been fined £50,000.
Having already served the initial three-match ban for the red card, Stephens will now miss Southampton’s upcoming Premier League matches against Arsenal and Leicester City.
“I am well aware that what I said was completely unacceptable and below the standard of conduct expected of me,” Stephens wrote in a letter to the FA Regulatory Commission.
“I am very embarrassed by my behaviour and want to apologise sincerely for it.”
Southampton suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Monday in Jack Stephens’ absence, extending their winless run to six Premier League games.
Saints manager Russell Martin expressed his disappointment, stating he was “hurt by the lack of spirit and fight” his team displayed during the loss.
