The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped one spot from 39th to 40th in the world based on FIFA’s latest rankings.
According to the list released on Thursday by the world football governing body, the three-time African champions stayed in sixth position on the continent.
Nigeria dropped on the global log despite the Eagles steamrolling Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 in their final African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 Group A qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo on September 10.
Victor Osimhen scored a hattrick while Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Samuel Chukwueze got the rest of the goals, which ensured Nigeria finished top of Group A with 15 points.
In the FIFA latest log, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia retained their positions as the top three African teams in that order while Algeria and Egypt punched above to complete the top five on the continent.
Meanwhile, Argentina remained number one in the world while France and Brazil maintained second and third spots, respectively. England and Belgium took the fourth and fifth positions in the ranking.
The next FIFA world ranking will be released on October 26, 2023.
