Despite starting 2024 strongly, the Super Eagles of Nigeria conclude the year ranked fifth in Africa and 44th globally, according to FIFA’s latest rankings released on Monday.
Nigeria, who were ranked 28th globally in January after reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final in Ivory Coast, have since fallen 16 places. Their position remains unchanged from November, with 1,482 points.
The three-time African champions now trail Morocco (14th), Senegal (17th), Egypt (33rd), and Algeria (37th) on the continent.
The Super Eagles’ drop in rankings reflects their lacklustre performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, where they struggled against Benin Republic and Rwanda. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda at home and managed only a 1-1 draw with Benin in the final international window of the year.
Globally, Argentina leads the FIFA rankings with 1,867 points, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil. The top 10 is completed by Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Germany.
The Super Eagles’ decline highlights a challenging year, emphasising the need for a stronger campaign in 2025.
