The Super Eagles of Nigeria will now take on the Pharaohs of Egypt in a “practice match” ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on December 16, following a change from the earlier date of December 14.

In a statement on Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explained that the adjustment complies with FIFA regulations, which permit clubs to keep their players until December 15 before releasing them for AFCON duties.

The federation noted that the game is strictly a “practice match”, allowing both sides to field more than five substitutes during the encounter.

The fixture is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time at Cairo Stadium.

Eric Chelle, head coach of the Super Eagles, recently unveiled a 54-player provisional list for the tournament. Notably, team captain William Troost-Ekong, who was included in the list, announced his retirement from international football just days later.

A final squad of 28 players will be selected from the provisional list soon.

The Super Eagles are expected to arrive at their training camp in Egypt on December 10, with additional friendly matches planned before AFCON kicks off on December 21.

Nigeria is placed in Group C, where they will face Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
