Tottenham agree Werner loan deal with RB Leipzig

Tottenham has reached an agreement to bring Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option for a permanent deal at the conclusion of the season.

The 27-year-old forward is set to undergo a medical in London, with Tottenham covering his wages for the remainder of the season.

Werner, who previously played in the Premier League with Chelsea after a £45 million transfer from RB Leipzig in 2020, scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues.

After returning to Leipzig in 2022, he has contributed two goals in 14 appearances this season.

The Bundesliga side disclosed on Saturday that Werner was excluded from their friendly against St Gallen due to ongoing transfer negotiations.

Leipzig boss Marco Rose has now confirmed the forward’s impending move to North London.

“It’s right that Timo wants to go on loan. Timo would like to go to the European Championship,” Rose told Sky Germany.

“We wish him all the best and are keeping our fingers crossed for him.”

With 57 caps for Germany, Werner’s last international appearance was in a friendly defeat against Belgium in March 2023.

Returning to London, where he previously won the Champions League during a two-year stint with the Blues, he aims to bolster Tottenham’s forward lineup.

The move comes as Son Heung-min is on duty with South Korea for the Asian Cup, and James Maddison remains sidelined due to injury.

Tottenham is gearing up for their upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United scheduled for Sunday, 14 January.
