After Sunday’s Super Lig match, Trabzonspor supporters stormed onto the field and assaulted Fenerbahce players.
Fenerbahce clinched a 3-2 victory at Papara Park in Trabzon, only to be confronted with violence as they celebrated their win.
Bright Osayi-Samuel and Michy Batshuayi attempted to intervene as security personnel rushed onto the field.
“Above all, sport is gentlemanship,” Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya posted on X.
“It is never acceptable for violence to take place on football pitches.”
The tension escalated in the 87th minute when objects were hurled onto the field following Batshuayi’s decisive goal for Fenerbahce, who were the visiting side. This incident is the latest in a string of controversial events in the Turkish league throughout the 2023-24 season.
In December, referee Halil Umut Meler was assaulted by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca, resulting in a suspension of Super Lig fixtures.
Fenerbahce currently occupies the second spot in the Super Lig standings, trailing leaders Galatasaray by two points, and maintains a comfortable 30-point lead over third-placed Trabzonspor.
