Transfer speculation a ‘disaster’ for Chelsea – Maresca

Enzo Maresca described managing Chelsea during the January transfer window as a “disaster,” citing the disruptive effect of speculation on players linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Friday, Maresca highlighted how ongoing rumours had unsettled his squad, contributing to a dip in form. Chelsea have dropped out of the Premier League’s top four after failing to win any of their last five matches.

Several players, including Renato Veiga, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Christopher Nkunku, have been linked with moves, with reported interest from Borussia Dortmund, Brighton, and Bayern Munich. Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei have reportedly been told they can leave the club.

“Off the pitch, it’s a disaster because of so many noises that I don’t think help us,” Maresca admitted ahead of Monday’s home clash against Wolves. “Even if a player seems focused, they are human beings, and noise about other clubs can affect them. We need to adapt.”

Despite Chelsea being 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, Maresca expressed satisfaction with his team’s performances, insisting they are creating opportunities and playing well despite poor results.

“On the pitch, we’re judged by results, but if you look at the performances, I’m happy. Sometimes you just don’t win games,” he said.

Injuries have also compounded Chelsea’s struggles, with Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, and Enzo Fernandez all doubts for the Wolves fixture after sustaining injuries during Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
