Two Premier League football players have been detained in connection with an alleged rape.
The duo, both 19 years old, were granted bail following police interviews.
They belong to the same club, which opted not to provide a statement regarding the accusations.
“Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape,” a police spokesperson said.
“A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.
“Both men have since been released on police bail.”
The accusations were initially brought to light by The Sun newspaper, which reported that the purported assault occurred on Friday.
It remains uncertain whether the players have been suspended pending the conclusion of the police investigation.
In 2022, the Premier League implemented compulsory sexual consent training for players and staff, prompted by notable incidents involving top-tier footballers.
A Panorama investigation in November revealed that Premier League clubs had allowed two footballers to continue playing and retained a manager in their position despite being aware of ongoing police investigations for sexual or domestic violence.
