Nigeria triumphed over New Zealand with a commanding 4-1 victory on Wednesday, setting a strong precedent for their campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The formidable Flamingos dominated the first half, netting three goals and making significant progress toward the next stage of the tournament in the Dominican Republic.
Shakira Moshood opened the scoring just two minutes into the Group A match. A stunning display of attacking football from the Nigerians saw them extend their lead to 3-0 by the 30th minute, with goals from Taiwo Adegoke and Fairdat Abdulwahab.
Upon resuming for the second half, the Flamingos added another goal through Taiwo Afolabi, bringing the score to 4-0. However, the Kiwis, who posed little threat to the Nigerian defense, managed to score a consolation goal to make it 4-1.
Despite having multiple opportunities to extend their lead, some missed chances hindered Coach Bankole Olowookere’s team from increasing their tally.
With this victory, Nigeria will now focus on their upcoming matches against Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, scheduled for Saturday, October 19th, and Tuesday, October 22nd, respectively.
The Flamingos previously achieved their best finish in the tournament by placing third in the last edition.
