U20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets lose 3-1 to Germany

Nigeria’s U20 women’s football team, the Falconets, suffered a 1-3 defeat to Germany in their second Group D match at the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia on Thursday.

The match, held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, saw the Falconets struggle to match Germany’s intensity.

Germany’s victory, their second in the tournament, puts them at the top of the group with six points, while Nigeria remains in second with three points after their earlier win against South Korea.

Germany opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Sehitler Alara, who capitalized on a defensive error.

Nigeria equalized in the 50th minute thanks to Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, but Germany quickly regained the lead with a goal from Sofie Zdebel in the 61st minute.

A potential Falconets goal was disallowed by VAR, and Germany sealed their win with a third goal from Sarah Ernst.

With two wins from two matches, Germany holds a perfect record, while Nigeria’s path to the Round of 16 becomes more challenging.

The Falconets now await the result of the Korea Republic vs. Venezuela match to assess their standing.

Nigeria will face Venezuela in their final group game on Saturday, while Germany will take on Korea Republic.
