UEFA sanctions seven nations for racist chants

The European governing body UEFA has imposed sanctions on seven of the 24 teams competing in Euro 2024 due to racist or discriminatory behavior by their fans.

The affected teams are Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, and Albania.

Sanctions include a 50,000 euros (£41,970) fine and a ban on selling tickets for Croatia’s next Uefa away match (a Nations League game in Portugal on 5 September).

Austria faces a 20,000 euros (£16,790) fine and a suspended ban on ticket sales for its next Uefa away match, which will only be enforced if there are further incidents in the next two years.

In total, 17 matches were identified as being impacted, including three involving Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, and Serbia.

This decision follows a day after Uefa charged Spain players Rodri and Alvaro Morata for violating “basic rules of conduct” after their final victory over England, during which they sang offensive songs about Gibraltar. The Gibraltar FA lodged a formal complaint regarding the incident.
