Uruguay clinched third place at the Copa America after a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Canada, following Luis Suarez’s dramatic injury-time equalizer.
Canada’s Ismael Kone had his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, and Alphonso Davies missed, securing the victory for Uruguay.
The match at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium went to penalties after ending 2-2 in regular time.
Rodrigo Bentancur initially put Uruguay ahead, but goals from Kone and Jonathan David gave Canada a 2-1 lead.
However, Suarez equalized in the second minute of injury time, sending the match to a shootout.
Suarez converted his penalty, making it 4-3 in the shootout after successful attempts by Federico Valverde, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and Bentancur.
Davies then attempted a panenka, hitting the crossbar and bouncing out.
Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted his side “barely deserved” to reach the shootout and acknowledged their underperformance in the tournament overall.
“I thought that given our roster, we could have played a bit better than what we showed,” he said.
Canada boss Jesse Marsch praised the overall performance of his side as they used the tournament as a stepping stone to the 2026 World Cup which they are co-hosting with the United States and Mexico.
Marsch added: “We’re still a young team. It’s not so easy to build a tactical model with such short time and under such big stresses against such good opponents.”
Copa America holders Argentina face Colombia in the final at 01:00 BST on Monday.
