Patrick Vieira secured his first win as Genoa coach on Sunday, guiding his team to a 2-0 victory at 10-man Udinese, lifting them out of the Serie A relegation zone.
Genoa are now 13th, three points clear of the bottom three, thanks to Andrea Pinamonti’s early close-range strike and an own goal from Lautaro Giannetti in the 67th minute.
Vieira, who took over from the sacked Alberto Gilardino during the international break, benefited from Udinese’s Isaak Toure being sent off just a minute into the match for elbowing Alessandro Zanoli.
Udinese, who sit ninth with 17 points, are in poor form, having now lost four of their last five matches under coach Kosta Runjaic.
Looking ahead, Napoli will face Torino as they aim to maintain their spot at the top of the table, while champions Inter Milan will take on high-flying Fiorentina in Florence.
Inter and Fiorentina are both one point behind Napoli, as are Lazio, who play Parma in one of two traditional Sunday afternoon fixtures.
The day’s action concludes with sixth-placed Juventus hosting struggling Lecce.
