Super Eagles interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has shared his thoughts on Victor Boniface’s current form, praising the striker’s potential while acknowledging his struggles in front of goal for the national team.
Following Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Libya in their AFCON 2025 qualifier, Eguavoen commented, “Boniface is a clinical striker, but he’s having a hard time finding his rhythm in national colors. Sometimes the chances just don’t come.” He pointed out that Boniface’s decision-making in crucial moments has been a challenge.
“I remember in Rwanda, and again today, when you get half a chance, players like Romario just poke the ball in. But Boniface wants to take extra touches, and by then, the defenders have recovered.”
Despite this, Eguavoen expressed confidence in the striker’s ability to improve, saying, “If he makes quicker decisions, I believe Boniface will score plenty of goals. I’ll talk to him about it.”
The Super Eagles secured their vital win against Libya on Friday evening in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, thanks to a late goal by substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
Match Highlights
In a closely contested match, Nigeria struggled to break down Libya’s solid defense. However, Dele-Bashiru, who came on in the second half, netted the decisive goal in the 86th minute, securing the hard-fought victory for Nigeria.
With star striker Victor Osimhen sidelined due to injury, the Super Eagles relied on Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon in attack. Lookman and Boniface had both played key roles in Nigeria’s recent matches against Benin and Rwanda, while Simon started against Libya, replacing Samuel Chukwueze.
Despite dominating possession throughout the game, Nigeria found it difficult to convert chances. Notably, Chukwueze missed a one-on-one opportunity in the 70th minute, and Lookman had a goal disallowed for offside in the 83rd minute.
Ultimately, Nigeria’s persistence paid off with Dele-Bashiru’s late strike, sending the home crowd into celebration.
The win strengthens Nigeria’s push for AFCON 2025 qualification, keeping them at the top of Group D with seven points.
