Why Samuel Kalu collapsed on the pitch: Bordeaux doctors

Bordeaux doctors have attributed Nigerian striker Samuel Kalu’s collapse on Sunday to “dizzy spell”.

Kalu collapsed on the pitch in a French Ligue 1 match at Marseille on Sunday where temperatures hit a sweltering 30 degrees.

He slumped at the early stage of the match but got on to continue the game.

He was, however, replaced by Remy Oudin minutes after.

The incident re-ignited memories of Denmark’s Christian Eriksen cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match.

Bordeaux doctors said for Kalu, it was just a dizzy spell.

“We’re happy for Kalu, everything is fine and that’s the most important thing.

“We inevitably thought about what happened with (Denmark midfielder Christian) Eriksen, the whole team and everyone was scared.”

Bordeaux coach Vladimir Petkovic also said: “With what happened with Eriksen at the Euros, we think about it. Everyone got a little scared. Fortunately, it ended well”.

The doctors said it was a simple discomfort and Kalu will be undergoing tests on Monday.

This is not the first time Kalu would have a medical emergency on the pitch.

In June 2019, Kalu was hospitalized after suffering from dehydration.

He was training with Nigerian teammates in the Egyptian heat during the Africa Cup of Nations
