Wolves hit quick-fire double to beat Blackburn in FA Cup

Premier League side Wolves delivered a decisive first-half performance to overcome Championship club Blackburn Rovers and advance to the FA Cup fifth round for the second consecutive season.

After a slow start at Ewood Park, Wolves struck twice within 100 seconds, but not before a controversial moment for the hosts. Blackburn thought they had taken the lead when Dominic Hyam headed in from a John Buckley free-kick, only for the goal to be ruled out by a tight offside call. Without Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in place until the fifth round, the linesman’s decision stood, though replays were inconclusive.

Wolves capitalized on their reprieve in the 33rd minute when Joao Gomes punished Blackburn’s attempt to play out from the back, sliding a shot under goalkeeper Balazs Toth. Moments later, Matheus Cunha doubled the lead with a composed finish from Nelson Semedo’s pass, putting Vitor Pereira’s side firmly in control.

Blackburn’s January signing Augustus Kargbo had a penalty appeal waved away after minimal contact from Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou, adding to the hosts’ frustrations before halftime.

The second half offered little in the way of drama, though Rovers pushed for a late lifeline. Makhtar Gueye came closest, but Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone produced an excellent save to preserve the clean sheet.

Cunha Shines as Wolves Advance

While Wolves are focused on Premier League survival this season, manager Vitor Pereira fielded a strong lineup to maintain momentum after their recent victory over Aston Villa. His decision paid off, with Matheus Cunha leading the charge. The Brazilian forward, previously linked with a high-profile transfer in January, showcased his class with a composed performance, including a well-taken goal and a near miss in the second half.

Blackburn’s Focus Turns to Promotion Push

Despite the loss, Blackburn, currently sixth in the Championship, remain in contention for a play-off spot as they seek to end a 13-year absence from the top flight. Manager John Eustace, who has been linked with the vacant Derby County job, can take encouragement from the performances of January signings Augustus Kargbo and Emmanuel Dennis, both of whom showed promise in the match.

The FA Cup fifth-round draw will take place at 19:10 GMT on Monday, live on BBC One.
