A record £5.18 million has been spent on transfers in women’s football this summer, more than double the amount spent in 2023.

This summer’s spending, spanning from June 1 to September 2, 2024, represents a 125% increase from the previous record of £2.3 million set last year.

Over 1,100 transfers have been recorded across professional leagues, marking a 30% rise compared to the previous year.

The Women’s Super League (WSL) led global spending with £1.78 million allocated to new signings.

WSL clubs have recouped approximately £760,000 from player sales, with the transfer window set to close on September 13.

Liverpool set a club record in June by signing Canadian teenager Olivia Smith from Sporting Lisbon for £210,000.

In the men’s game, a total of £4.92 billion has been spent worldwide, the second-highest amount in history but a 13% decrease from 2023.

A record 11,000 transfers have been documented, including pending deals.

English clubs led global spending with £1.29 billion spent on new players. Julian Alvarez’s £81.5 million transfer to Atletico Madrid from Manchester City is the highest single-player transfer, while Tottenham’s £55 million acquisition of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is the most expensive signing by an English club.
