The Super Falcons on Thursday defeated Australia 3-2 at the Brisbane Stadium.
The Nigerian woman defeated her opponent to earn her team’s first victory of the match and their fifth victory overall in the Women’s World Cup’s history.
The nine-time African champions have only triumphed four times in the competition’s history: twice in 1999 (against North Korea and Denmark), once in 2011 (against Canada), and once in 2019 (when they also defeated North Korea 2-0).
With the victory, the Super Falcon’s chances of moving on to the round of 16 have increased after Canada defeated Ireland 2-1 on Wednesday.
In their opening match at the tournament, the Falcons displayed defensive prowess, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie saving a penalty, to secure a commendable point.
In their only previous Women’s World Cup meeting in 2015, Australia emerged victorious with a 2-0, but this time, the Falcons have settled the score.
