Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has denied claims that he nearly bit an opponent’s leg during the team’s 3-1 loss to Birmingham City on Monday.

Video replays seemed to show Mullin coming close to biting Alex Cochrane’s calf, but he pulled his mouth away before making contact.

Mullin wrote on X,: “I know what it looks like.. but it didn’t happen. Although you can tell his leg was thinking about attacking my mouth.”

Cochrane told Sky Sports after the game: “I don’t really know to be honest, I was on the floor. I think it was just a bit of handbags, out of nothing, but not too much. Just a load of nonsense, really.”

Mullin, Wrexham’s leading scorer for the past three seasons, entered the highly anticipated League One match at St Andrew’s as a substitute in the 63rd minute.

An incident in the 81st minute sparked a confrontation between both teams, resulting in bookings for Mullin and Birmingham’s Krystian Bielik.

Bielik was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card five minutes later for a foul on Wrexham’s Andy Cannon.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies stated that he had not seen the initial altercation.

“I had my back turned to the melee because there was all that nonsense going on,” he said.

Wrexham captain James McClean was also booked for his involvement in the altercations between players. After being substituted, McClean appeared to catch an object thrown from the stands as he made his way around the perimeter of the pitch.

Birmingham City came from behind to win the match, ending Wrexham’s unbeaten start to the season. The victory moved Birmingham into second place, level on points with Phil Parkinson’s side but ahead on goal difference.
