Barcelona moved up to second place in La Liga following a remarkable late winner by teenage winger Lamine Yamal, securing a 1-0 triumph against Mallorca at home.

The visitors appeared poised to thwart Barcelona, especially after Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty was saved in the 24th minute.

In the second half, 16-year-old Yamal struck the crossbar early on before unleashing a superb effort from just inside the box to secure the win.

With this victory, Barcelona is now within five points of leaders Real Madrid, who are set to face Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Having remained unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions, Barcelona currently sits two points above Girona ahead of their match against Osasuna on Saturday.

Despite coach Xavi’s touchline suspension, Barcelona started positively, leading to winger Raphinha being fouled in the box by defender Jose Manuel Copete.

Summer signing Gundogan stepped up to take the penalty, but his side-footed shot was saved by Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.

After Yamal’s near miss, Marc Guiu was denied by Rajkovic, prompting Barcelona to bring on Vitor Roque and Robert Lewandowski just past the hour mark.

Roque missed a golden opportunity with a header over the bar, but Yamal later combined with Lewandowski outside the box, creating enough space to fire a precise curling shot beyond Rajkovic into the far corner.

This marked Lamal’s sixth goal of the season. Earlier in the season, he became the youngest goalscorer for both Barcelona and Spain. This goal also represents his first since netting twice in the 3-3 draw against Granada at home last month.
