Yamal nets brace as Barcelona maintain perfect start
Lamine Yamal scored twice as Barcelona continued their flawless start to the season with a commanding 4-1 away victory over Girona.
The 17-year-old Spanish winger opened the scoring in the 30th minute by stealing the ball from David Lopez deep in Girona’s half and finishing beyond goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
Yamal added his second seven minutes later with a composed, first-time strike from the edge of the box after a free-kick from Raphinha rebounded to him.
Girona, who finished third last season, thought they had a penalty when Bryan Gil’s header struck Inigo Martinez’s arm, but the decision was overturned after a review by the video assistant referee.
Dani Olmo scored Barcelona’s third goal in the 47th minute with a fine finish from a tight angle, becoming the first player to score in his first three Barcelona league matches since Cesc Fabregas in 2011.
Midfielder Pedri then added a fourth goal 17 minutes later, finishing a defense-splitting pass from Marc Casado past Gazzaniga.
Substitute Cristhian Stuani scored a consolation goal for Girona ten minutes from time with a first-time finish inside the penalty area.
Six minutes later, former Manchester City winger Ferran Torres, who had been on the pitch for just 17 minutes, received a red card for a heavy challenge on Yaser Asprilla.
The win puts Hansi Flick’s Barcelona four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after securing their fifth consecutive victory.
