    Manchester United extend Maguire Contract

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the club have triggered a one-year extension to Harry Maguire’s contract, while discussions for a new deal with winger Amad Diallo are close to being finalised.

Maguire, 31, had been linked with a possible departure following reduced playing time and the loss of the captaincy in July 2023 under former manager Erik ten Hag. His contract had been due to expire on 30 June 2024.

Speaking on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool, Amorim said, “For Harry Maguire, we are going to trigger our option. I spoke with him this morning and told him he has to improve on the pitch; we need him a lot.”

Amorim highlighted Maguire’s leadership qualities, adding, “When you look at our team, we are crying out for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, but he needs to improve in that regard and also his overall game. We are happy to continue.”

On Amad, Amorim expressed confidence about securing the 22-year-old winger’s long-term future. Amad’s current contract is also set to expire this summer.

The Ivorian has been a key player this season, notably scoring the winner in the Manchester derby.

“Amad’s deal is near,” Amorim confirmed, underlining the winger’s importance to his plans.

In a related update, Amorim ruled Marcus Rashford out of the trip to Anfield due to illness.

The forward had missed several recent matchday squads but returned as a substitute in Monday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

  • Manchester United strip Harry Maguire of team’s captaincy

Manchester United strip Harry Maguire of team’s captaincy

Harry Maguire says he has been stripped of the Manchester United captaincy after crunch talks with Erik Ten Hag, the English Premier League (EPL) club’s coach.

The 30-year-old England defender broke the news in a statement on Twitter on Sunday.

Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million.

He was appointed skipper by Ten Hag’s predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020.

The centre-back has, however, endured a torrid time at the club replete with gaffes in defence. There have also been calls for his removal as United’s captain.

In the tweet, Maguire said he is “extremely disappointed” but will “continue to give my all” in United’s shirt.

“After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain,” he wrote.

“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.

“So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.

“Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field.

“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.”

Maguire managed only 16 EPL matches last season after featuring in at least 30 matches every season since his arrival at Old Trafford.

He has played 175 times for Man United in all competitions.

  • I had a disappointing outing last year, will fight to get back into form – Man Utd Captain, Maguire

Manchester United’s captain, Harry Maguire has admitted that his performance for the club last season was below par and needs improvement.

Maguire had been singled out as one of the culprits for the Red Devils’ mediocre output that’ saw them lose out on a Champions League spot and concede numerous goals in a lethargic setup at the back.

In spite of this, the new boss, Ten Hag, has still placed his faith in the 29-year-old by reiterating that Maguire will still put on the captain’s hand at the start of the new season

“Listen, last year was disappointing,” an apparently frustrated Maguire said at a question and answer session in Melbourne on Saturday that also featured in form Anthony Martial, Alex Telles and Tom Heaton.

‘As an individual, I didn’t play well, and as a team, we certainly didn’t play well. But a good career can last 10 to 15 years and you’re never going to have every year where it’s plain sailing and you don’t have any difficulties.

Maguire had faced a torrid time in the months of March and April after he was  booed by England fans when he played against Ivory Coast at Wembley and a bomb threat that saw him move his new partner and their two children out of their Cheshire home

However, the former Leicester man claims he has enough fight in him to overcome the challenges placed before him.

‘You’re going to have to fight, you’re going to have setbacks and last year was certainly a setback for me on my career path,” he said.

‘Everyone – the players, the club – know last year was nowhere near good enough, but it’s a fresh start and we’ve got a big season ahead.

‘We’re working towards being ready for that first Premier League game, that’s what matters. Everything we’re doing now is building for that first game”

  • Man Utd sign England defender Maguire

Manchester United have signed Leicester City’s England centre back, Harry Maguire, on a six-year contract, the Manchester club announced on Monday.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed but British media reported the transfer fee was in the region of 80 million pounds, making Maguire the most expensive defender in the world.

The fee eclipses the 75 million pounds Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January last year.

“Man-U is delighted to confirm the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

“Harry signs on a six-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year,’’ United said in a statement on their website.

The 26-year-old becomes the Old Trafford club’s second most expensive recruit after French midfielder, Paul Pogba, who was signed for a then world-record 89 million pounds from Juventus in 2016.

United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, described Maguire as “one of the best centre backs in the game today’’.

“He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes,’’ the Norwegian said.

“I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.

“He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club.’’

Maguire, who helped England reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, had signed a contract extension to 2023 with Leicester last year and played 31 times in the league last season, scoring three goals.

“I am delighted to have signed for this great club.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons,’’ Maguire said.

“However, when Manchester United come knocking, it is an incredible opportunity.

“From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team.

“It’s clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies.

“I am now looking forward to meeting my new team mates and getting the season started.’’
