‘National Necessity,’ Uzodimma backs emergency rule in Rivers

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

He described the move as a necessary and proactive measure to avert a potential crisis that could destabilize both the state and Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Uzodimma highlighted the critical importance of Rivers State to the nation’s economic stability, particularly in terms of crude oil production.

He pointed out that the ongoing political tensions and the refusal of key stakeholders to heed advisory interventions had escalated into a matter of national security.

The governor cited recent incidents of pipeline bombings and explosions in the state, emphasizing that such unrest is unacceptable at a time when Nigeria is working to increase crude oil production to bolster its currency and economy.

“The President was very proactive, and his actions are highly commendable. Prevention, they say, is better than cure. Imagine what would have happened if the impeachment went ahead—it would have triggered actions and reactions, leading to violence and widespread unrest,” Uzodimma stated.

He also commended the National Assembly for supporting President Tinubu’s decision, describing it as a step taken in the national interest.

He expressed confidence in the Federal Executive Council’s ability to oversee the situation effectively and ensure that law and order prevail.

While acknowledging that the Progressive Governors’ Forum had not yet convened since the declaration, Uzodimma assured that, as chairman, he could confidently affirm that the forum stands firmly behind the President.

“To the best of my knowledge, none of our members will go against the actions of the President. We support any decision that protects the security and stability of the country,” he concluded.

Fubara: No law allows the president to suspend a governor – Falz

Rapper and lawyer Falz has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara and declare a state of emergency in the area.

On Tuesday night, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the administrator to oversee the state’s affairs and suspended Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers state house of assembly for six months.

Tinubu’s action followed a prolonged political crisis in the state. The president also cited “constitutional violations” by Fubara, including the “collapse” of the legislative arm of government.

In an X post, the ‘Soft Work’ hitmaker questioned the justification for the state of emergency, asking if Rivers is “at war” or “threatening the existence of the federation”.

The lawyer also shared screenshots of the constitution, highlighting provisions for declaring a state of emergency.

“Rivers State, there is absolutely no law that allows a president to suspend a governor. A governor is elected into office and may only be removed by impeachment,” he wrote.

“Also, is Rivers state at war? Is there ‘actual breakdown of public order’? Is there a threat to the existence of the federation?”

  • Labour demands immediate reversal of emergency rule in Rivers

Labour demands immediate reversal of emergency rule in Rivers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has unequivocally condemned what they described as hasty and unconstitutional declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

The labour unions called for the immediate reversal of the declaration, saying that the action blatantly violates the provisions of Part II, Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and constitutes an overreach of executive power.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday jointly signed by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero and his TUC counterpart, Festus Osifo.

“The purported suspension or removal of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and the State House of Assembly is not only unlawful but a direct assault on democracy.

“It sets a dangerous precedent, eroding constitutional governance and threatening the autonomy of subnational governments.

“No democratic society can thrive where elected leaders are arbitrarily removed at the whims of the President. This reckless move should deeply concern every reasonable governor and citizen who believes in the rule of law,” the statement said.

The unions urged President Tinubu to revoke the “unconstitutional declaration” in compliance with Section 305(6) of the Constitution, which they said clearly outlines the legal process for declaring and sustaining a state of emergency.

They further said, “The President, as the custodian of the nation’s executive powers, must exercise restraint, respect constitutional limits, and act in a manner that inspires national confidence rather than suspicion.

“Any decision that jeopardizes national security, economic stability, and democratic governance must be reconsidered.

“Nigeria has suffered the painful consequences of political overreach in the past, and we cannot afford to repeat such mistakes.

“Beyond the political and legal implications, this unjustified state of emergency will have severe socio-economic repercussions on workers and the masses. It will: Disrupt economic activities, forcing businesses to shut down or scale back operations; Lead to job losses, wage cuts, and economic hardship for thousands of workers in both the formal and informal sectors; Create an atmosphere of uncertainty, discouraging investment and slowing economic growth in Rivers State and beyond; Expose citizens to security risks, as history has shown that politically motivated states of emergency often escalate rather than resolve crises.

The Labour movement said it will not remain silent while the livelihoods of workers and the well-being of ordinary Nigerians are threatened by political machinations.

“Given his storied background in political struggle, we urge Mr. President not to betray his democratic credentials by engaging in actions reminiscent of military-era authoritarianism.

“Leadership demands wisdom, restraint, and an unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

“We demand the immediate reversal of this unconstitutional state of emergency in the interest of democracy, economic stability, and the welfare of Nigerian workers. Nigeria’s democracy must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency,” the statement added.

Hilda Dokubo slams Tinubu over state of emergency In Rivers

The actress Hilda Dokubo has denounced President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers state.

Citing a protracted political crisis in the state, the president’s decision, which was made public Tuesday night, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state house assembly.

Additionally, Tinubu named retired vice-admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Rivers State’s administrator.

Many Nigerians questioned the validity of the president’s conduct, which drew harsh condemnation on social media.

Joining the fray, Dokubo questioned the president’s motives, suggesting that the declaration was an “attempt to annex the state” while ignoring the real issues.

In an Instagram post, the 55-year-old actress argued that Rivers has enjoyed peace for the past two years under Fubara’s leadership.

Dokubo, who is the chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Rivers, added that the state of emergency declaration was “unnecessary”.

“State of emergency because for two years we have had peace! State of emergency because you want to capture the economic soul of Rivers state! State of emergency because of one man? Shameless!” she wrote.

“Perhaps Mr President should say he wants to annexed Rivers state!”

BREAKING: Tinubu declares state of emergency in Rivers, suspends Fubara, deputy, house of assembly

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers state.

The president made the announcement on Tuesday in a nationwide broadcast over the political crisis and instability in the state.

Tinubu said Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state; his deputy, Ngozi Odu; and all members of the Rivers assembly are “hereby suspended for an initial period of six months”.

“The latest security reports made available to me show that between yesterday and today there have been disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militant without the governor taking any action to curtail them. I have, of course given stern order to the security agencies to ensure safety of lives of the good people of Rivers State and the oil pipelines,” he said.

“With all these and many more, no good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which no doubt requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security.

“In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do.

“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.”

Declare State of Emergency in Zamfara over Insecurity, APC urges FG

The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency to ensure the success of efforts to combat banditry in the state.

In a statement signed by the party’s spokesperson, Yusuf Idris, the APC accused Governor Dauda Lawal of undermining the Federal Government’s fight against banditry. The party alleged that Lawal’s actions were politically motivated, aimed at preventing his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, from achieving success in the ongoing military operations.

According to the statement, the military’s recent operations against bandits in Zamfara, coordinated by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, under President Bola Tinubu’s directives, have shown significant progress. The APC noted that bandit leaders who previously held sway in the region are now being overpowered.

The party expressed disappointment with Governor Lawal, accusing him of attempting to derail the military efforts through media campaigns designed to distract the Federal Government’s focus. It claimed that Lawal’s opposition stems from concerns that the success of these operations would hinder his political plans for 2027, which allegedly involve leveraging insecurity as a campaign tool.

The APC further alleged that Governor Lawal has not supported the military’s efforts with necessary logistics and has even been confrontational, with the military at one point warning him to stay away from their operations. The party believes that Lawal is unhappy with the success of the military operations because they are being led by his political rival, Matawalle.

The statement called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, arguing that this would allow security forces to carry out their mission without interference from the state government. The APC also accused Lawal of falsely presenting himself as the sponsor of the military operations, despite having no role in their success.

In addition, the party criticized Governor Lawal for failing to address security issues since assuming office in May of the previous year. It claimed that Lawal has focused on attacking his predecessor, Matawalle, rather than cooperating with him to combat the banditry that has plagued the state.

The APC highlighted that Matawalle, as both the Minister of State for Defence and a Zamfara native, had extended offers to work with Lawal in addressing the security challenges. However, the party claimed that these offers were ignored, with Lawal instead launching baseless accusations against Matawalle.

The party concluded by praising the Federal Government’s resolve to eliminate banditry in the region, stating that President Tinubu’s directive for Matawalle to lead the military operations has been effective in weakening the bandits’ grip on the region. However, it noted that Governor Lawal has continued to politicize the issue, using media platforms to falsely claim credit for the military’s success.

  • NNPC declares State of Emergency on Oil Production

NNPC declares State of Emergency on Oil Production

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has declared a state of emergency for oil and gas production in Nigeria.

Mele Kyari, the company’s Group Chief Executive Officer, announced this in a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 23rd edition of the Nigeria Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition (NOG Energy Week) in Abuja on Tuesday.

“We have decided to stop the debate. We have declared war on the challenges affecting our crude oil production. War means war. We have the right tools.

“We know what to fight. We know what we have to do at the level of assets. We have contacted our partners. “And we will work together to improve the situation,” he stated.

According to him, a detailed analysis of assets revealed that Nigeria can conveniently produce two million barrels of crude oil per day without deploying new rigs, but the major impediment to achieving that remains the inability of players to act in a timely manner.

He said the “war” would help NNPC and its partners to speedily clear all identified obstacles to effective and efficient production such as delays in procurement processes, which have become a challenge in the industry.

On medium to long-term measures aimed at boosting and sustaining production, Kyari said NNPC would replace all the old crude oil pipelines built over four decades ago and also introduce a rig sharing programme with its partners to ensure that production rigs stay in the country for between four and five years which is the standard practice in most climes.

He called on all players in the industry to collaborate towards reducing the cost of production and boosting production to target levels.

He expressed the Company’s commitment to investing in critical midstream gas infrastructure such as the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipelines to boost domestic gas production and supply for power generation, industrial development and economic prosperity of the country.

On Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Kyari observed that NNPC has since keyed into the Presidential CNG drive, adding that in conjunction with partners such as NIPCO Gas, NNPC Ltd has built a number of CNG stations, 12 of which will be commissioned on Thursday in Lagos and Abuja.

The opening ceremony of the event also saw goodwill messages and keynotes presented by the Secretary General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Haitham Al Ghais; Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Mohamed Hamel; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo; Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen; as well as the Chairman, Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG), Abdulrazaq Isa.
