We’re all family now so I can’t date any of them, we’re family now and we respect each other”.

How Burna Boy ordered Omawumi, Waje out of studio — Timaya

Afro-dancehall legend Inetimi Alfred Odom, better known by his stage name Timaya, has talked about a memorable encounter with Grammy-winning Burna Boy and well-known singers Waje and Omawumi.

Timaya recounted a contentious studio altercation from years ago in an enthralling interview with Naija FM, Lagos.

The singer recalled the time Burna Boy, full of confidence and vision, announced outright that he would one day command the kind of success that would allow him to travel in private planes.

Even if his confidence was admirable, Omawumi and Waje were sceptical of the young artist’s bold declaration, according to Timaya.

Timaya claimed that Burna, who was driven by a strong faith in his destiny, would not accept their scepticism and insisted that they vacate the studio.

The music star described the incident as a defining chapter in Burna’s journey, a testament to the star’s unwavering resolve to manifest his dreams against all odds.

    Timaya said:

“Nothing Burna Boy is doing now surprises me. The guy is fearless. There was one time when Burna Boy, Omawumi and Waje were in the studio, and he [Burna Boy] started saying that a time would come when he would be getting paid to enter jet.

“Omawumi and Waje started doubting him because then Nigerian artists hadn’t started flying private jets. He got angry and opened the studio door and asked them to leave.”

  • There has always been competition in Nigerian music industry – Timaya

There has always been competition in Nigerian music industry – Timaya

Nigerian musician Inetimi Alfred Odom, better known by his stage name Timaya, has asserted that there is no friendship among colleagues in the Nigerian music industry.

According to Timaya, coworkers are not friends and should not be treated as such.

Timaya stated in an interview with Channels TV:

“Your colleagues are not your friends na. The only person who wants to see you better than them is your father o, your parents.

“I’m not looking for anything from anybody. If Adidas can collaborate with Gucci, then what are you talking about? Collaboration, I said it a long time ago, ‘collabo follow for promo.’

But there are some artists you will collaborate with right now and they’ll end up not showing up for the video shoot. You even have to pay a fee before you can feature some of them. And those things are killing the music and creativity.

“Times have changed, you can’t blame them. Old ways cannot open new doors. There’s a lot going on. There are also tendencies to be vindictive towards colleagues that did you wrong. So already there’s a strain there. There has never been love in the music industry, na normal thing. It’s just like in an office, there’s competition na. It’s a normal.”

Things are really hard – Timaya laments

Singer Inetimi Alfred Odom, often known as Timaya, has expressed concern over the current hardship in the country.

Although economic suffering is a worldwide occurrence, he pointed out that Nigeria experiences the worst of it.

In a recent interview, Timaya talked to Channels Television.

“Things are really hard. I feel it for people because if people are not happy, I can’t be happy, too. I pay bills. I help a lot of people. So I understand what people are going through. I’m also feeling it [the hardship],” he lamented.

“My staff’s salaries and upkeep for family members have drastically increased because of the high cost of living.

“You don’t expect things to be normal. Even politicians are crying, too, not to talk of me. The only way you can meet up with the current economic demands is if you’re earning in dollars. If you’re earning forex and you convert it to naira, that’s how you can ball.

“Even in America right now, things are still hard there because they’re earning in dollars and spending in dollars. It’s hard everywhere. The world is hard right now, but Nigeria is harder.”

Timaya also spoke on the effects of the current economic hardship on the entertainment industry.

“Currently, you need a lot of money to promote music. Before, we didn’t even bother about shooting music videos. Even if we were shooting a video, it cost just N1.5 million.

“Now, just to shoot one video: 100 million, 50 million, 60 million. And when you shoot the video, to promote it, you need more millions. That’s why booking fees for artists now are expensive,” he said

When I left Port Harcourt, I told a lot of people, even Burna Boy, I told him bro, you have to leave here.

Because, it’s not like it’s — at some point, I think when you grow up and blow up from a place, you’ve gotta get out of that place. Because the dream is to get to Hollywood, not to buy back the block.

And that’s why the people, the rappers, like see Nipsey Hussle, he died in the block. You can help people from afar. There’s a lot of envy, and all that.

I was almost killed in Port Harcourt after I blew up. So I’m like there’s too much envy. I know my childhood friends that were my guys and they see me doing fine, they’ll just think you’re posing. You feel me?

So it’s better to just dey hail from far. Like, I love you but I can love you from afar. Na him be dey your dey [laughs]. Do you understand? So at some point, you’ve got to understand that not everybody got to go to that next level with you.

Because to live in Lagos at that point was too expensive for me. Even to do a promotion.

“So, I needed to go back and start from my foundation. I left Port Harcourt after I blew. Even Burna Boy, I told him he had to leave Port Harcourt. If you blow up in a place, you have to leave there and love them from afar.
