Nigeria launches national emergency toll-free number
The Minister of Communication, Dr Isa Pantami, representing President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday launched the National Emergency Toll-Free Number (112).
The 112 emergency number aimed at securing the lives and properties of Nigerians was launched alongside the commissioning of the Katsina State Emergency Communications Center.
Speaking at the event, while stressing on the importance of the national emergency toll-free number, Pantami thanked the people of Katsina State for producing Buhari, who he described as “a respectable individual we are all proud of”.
“Our efforts at the Ministry of Communications are focused on the implementation of the next level agenda of the administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The launch of the ‘112’ emergency number is a product of ICT and it can reach enviable heights through the deployment of ICTs.
“ICT plays a critical role in promoting the socio-economic development of any society and also securing the lives and property of her citizens.
“Security and public safety organisations can use the power of ICT-powered calls to rescue a patient/victim and they can also harvest data that can be used to prevent future emergencies or better prepare for them,” Pantami said.
