Chinese AI app DeepSeek has been blocked from downloads in South Korea pending a review of its data handling practices, Seoul authorities announced on Monday.
The Personal Information Protection Commission stated that DeepSeek had not fully considered domestic privacy laws. The company has acknowledged the issue and agreed to suspend new downloads while making necessary adjustments.
The app was removed from South Korean app stores on Saturday, though it remains accessible to existing users. Authorities have advised caution, urging users to avoid entering personal data until the review is complete.
DeepSeek faces increasing global scrutiny, with Italy investigating its data practices and Australia banning it from government devices. US lawmakers have also proposed a ban on security grounds.
