[TECHNOLOGY] Hidden pressure of looking successful on social media

A young Nigerian opens Instagram and sees someone his age showing off a new car. He scrolls further and sees another person travelling abroad, wearing expensive clothes or celebrating a major achievement.

He looks at his own life and begins to wonder, “Am I not doing enough?”

This is the hidden pressure social media creates for some young people. What should be a place to connect and share experiences has also become a place where people compare their lives with others.

Today, many people feel the need to look successful online, even when things are not going well behind the scenes.

Some spend money they cannot afford just to wear expensive clothes, buy the latest phones or visit places where they can take pictures. Others feel embarrassed about their situation because their lives do not look as exciting as what they see online.

The problem is that social media does not show everything. People post their achievements, happy moments and expensive purchases, but rarely share their struggles, debts or disappointments.

As a result, someone who is genuinely making progress may begin to feel like a failure simply because another person appears to be doing better.

The pressure can also affect relationships. Some people feel they must buy expensive gifts, organise big celebrations or constantly post their partners to prove that their relationships are going well.

But behind the pictures and likes, everyone has a different story.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating success or enjoying nice things. The problem begins when people start making decisions mainly to impress others.

For young Nigerians trying to build careers, start businesses and become financially independent, this pressure can become a distraction from their real goals.

Social media should inspire people, not make them feel that their lives are worthless.

Sometimes, the person making quiet progress without posting anything may be doing better than someone trying so hard to impress the internet.

At the end of the day, looking successful online is not the same as building a successful life.
