Security has been intensified around the Rainbow Event Center in Abuja, the venue of the African Democratic Congress national convention.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, about 7,000 delegates are expected to take part in electing members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), who will steer its affairs for the next four years.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services were stationed at the venue, conducting strict checks at entry points before granting access to delegates.

Security patrol vehicles were also deployed at key locations, while journalists underwent rigorous screening before being allowed into the premises.

The convention is taking place against the backdrop of a leadership tussle within the party, with multiple factions laying claim to control. The Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier withdrawn recognition of all factions pending the resolution of ongoing legal disputes.

Speaking at the venue, Dino Melaye insisted the event would proceed despite attempts to halt it.

“Yesterday, there were deliberate efforts to stop us from holding this convention. All the venues were applied for but were not approved.

“As at 11pm last night, the owners of this venue attempted to cancel this programme, but we stood our ground, and we will proceed with the convention today.”

Also, Kabiru Saje of the party’s New Media committee said the convention could either produce new leadership or reaffirm the current one.

“Despite attempts by authorities to stop the programme yesterday evening, we stood our ground because it is our right to hold this convention.

“Although we faced challenges with securing a venue and had to change locations multiple times, preparations are now in place, and the event will go ahead as planned.

“The convention is expected to start by 11 a.m., and the atmosphere is positive, with delegates arriving and everything properly arranged.”

Saje added that the party remains confident in its leadership, describing it as experienced and committed to progress.
