The Senate has instructed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to increase its 2025 revenue target from ₦6 trillion to ₦10 trillion, citing the urgent need for improved enforcement and surveillance in light of growing smuggling and insecurity nationwide.
Senator Isah Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, issued the directive on Monday during a budget defence session with Deputy Comptroller General of Customs, Jibo Bello.
The committee raised concerns over gaps in the government’s tariff policy, criticising the NCS for failing to enforce the 4% freight on board (FOB) levy, which is calculated based on the cost of goods.
In response, Bello informed the committee that the Ministry of Finance had authorised the suspension of the 4% FOB collection.
Senator Jibrin subsequently summoned the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to appear before the committee to explain the decision, which the Senate views as a violation of existing laws.
The Senate is set to question the finance minister and other key stakeholders on Thursday, aiming to uphold legislative oversight, ensure revenue efficiency, and strengthen national security measures through effective customs operations.
