The Presidency on Saturday night clarified that former Benue State Governor, George Akume, remains the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

This clarification follows reports suggesting that Akume had stepped down from his role to assume the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In response, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga stated that “there has been no change in the status” of Akume.

He further emphasized, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.

“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” he said.

On Friday, June 27, 2025, former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje officially resigned as APC National Chairman, creating room for the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, to assume the role.

Although APC spokesman Felix Morka explained that Ganduje stepped down to attend to “urgent and important personal matters,” speculation suggests that internal opposition—particularly from those critical of his appointment on zoning grounds—may have influenced his decision.

Dalori, from the North East, will act as National Chairman until the National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes to formally fill the position left vacant by Ganduje’s resignation.

Ganduje, who hails from the North-West, took over party leadership in August 2023 after Abdullahi Adamu, from the North Central zone, stepped down.

Ganduje served as Governor of Kano State from May 2015 to May 2023. In January 2025, President Tinubu appointed him Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
