The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to deliberate on the “state of the nation”.
In a post on X, Obi revealed that the discussion with the former president took place in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Thursday.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan,” Obi wrote.
“We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation.”
The meeting comes amid rising speculation about Jonathan’s possible interest in contesting the presidency in 2027.
Several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, have indicated that the party may be considering Jonathan or Obi as potential candidates for the 2027 elections.
Abba Moro, senator representing Benue south, also confirmed that discussions have been ongoing with both Jonathan and Obi about a potential return to the PDP.
Moro added that Obi could emerge as the party’s presidential flagbearer in 2027 if he decides to return.
While Obi, currently a key figure in the Labour Party (LP) and part of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has openly declared his intention to run in 2027, Jonathan has so far remained non-committal.
Last week, Jonathan stated that he was betrayed by allies during his 2015 re-election bid.
“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election,” he said.
He further observed that in politics, it is rare to find people who hold the same stance consistently in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
