Ukraine on Thursday received 1,000 bodies from Russia, which Moscow said were fallen Ukrainian soldiers, Kyiv’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced on Telegram.

In exchange, Ukraine returned the remains of 24 Russian soldiers, according to another government body that provides updates on Russian prisoners of war and missing personnel.

The transfer of bodies and prisoner exchanges remain among the few areas of cooperation between the two countries since Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Ukraine’s “I Want to Find” project said the exchange was mediated by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Tens of thousands of troops have died on both sides, though casualty figures are rarely disclosed. Despite recent diplomatic efforts, the Kremlin confirmed last week that peace talks with Ukraine were on “pause.”
