The Benue State Police Command successfully prevented a kidnapping on Christmas Day, rescuing one Geoffrey Akume.

DSP Udeme Edet, the command’s spokesperson, revealed the details in a statement released on Thursday in Makurdi.

According to Edet, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day at Tiortu, along Gboko/Makurdi Road. The victim, traveling from Gboko to Makurdi, was confronted by armed men suspected to be kidnappers.

The assailants forcibly abducted the victim and were attempting to take him into a nearby dense forest.

“Upon receipt of the distress information, operatives of the Benue State Police Command swiftly swung into action, conducting intensive patrols and a coordinated search of the area.

“On sighting the police team and hearing the sirens, the perpetrators abandoned the victim and fled into the forest. The police successfully rescued him unharmed, and no ransom was paid.

“He was later taken to Abinse Police Station, where the Benue State Commissioner of Police debriefed him before reuniting him with his family,” Edet explained.

Edet added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the quick response, bravery, and professionalism of the officers involved.

Emenari also reassured Benue residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, especially during the festive period. He noted that patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-led policing have been intensified across key areas in the state.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through approved emergency channels. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects,” she concluded.
