The Nigerian Army’s Operation Hadin Kai has confirmed that the explosion at a mosque in Borno State on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was carried out by a suicide bomber.
Report online had earlier reported that at least five people were killed and 35 others injured following the blast at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. The explosion occurred during the evening Maghrib prayer.
In an update on Thursday, Theatre Command spokesman Lt. Col. Sani Uba, as reported by Channels TV, said investigations revealed that a Boko Haram terrorist was responsible.
“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist (BHT) suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the scene,” he said.
“The troops, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded swiftly, securing and cordoning off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety,” the statement added.
Lt. Col. Uba noted that casualties were immediately taken to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for medical treatment. He confirmed that 32 civilians sustained injuries of varying severity.
“Two of the injured civilians later died at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining injured persons are stable and receiving appropriate medical care,” he said.
Reassuring residents about their safety during the festive season, Lt. Col. Uba stated that troops and other security agencies have increased surveillance and security operations in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
