The Ogun State Government has suspended the ongoing selection process for the new Awujale of Ijebuland, citing urgent concerns over increasing petitions, intelligence from security agencies, and the need to preserve peace and the sacred integrity of the revered traditional stool.
In a statement dated January 20, 2026, Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, explained that the move follows numerous petitions and reports from security agencies and key stakeholders closely involved in the succession process. The government highlighted the importance of the Awujale stool as one of the foremost and most respected traditional institutions in Yorubaland, particularly in Ogun State.
The late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, significantly raised the prestige of the throne locally and globally. His monumental legacy has drawn heightened public attention and scrutiny to the selection of his successor, making decisive government action essential.
“The State Government receives several petitions and intelligence reports related to the ongoing selection. To maintain public order, safeguard the integrity of the process, and uphold the veneration of the stool, halting the selection is imperative at this time,” the statement underscores.
The government also referenced the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the Executive Council to suspend appointments when necessary for peace, order, and good governance. By acting proactively, the government aims to prevent any potential disruption of law and order and ensure that the Awujale succession is conducted through a transparent and widely accepted process.
As a result, the government has instructed the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to pause all activities related to the selection until further directives are issued regarding the resumption of the process.
This decision temporarily delays the highly anticipated succession to the prestigious Awujale throne, as the Ogun State Government undertakes a careful review, reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful, credible, and inclusive resolution.
