The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday began impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The development was reported by Leadership Newspaper.

The impeachment notice was introduced on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and subsequently read during plenary by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Lawmakers stated that the move is based on Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers a state legislature to commence impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

A total of 38 lawmakers endorsed the impeachment notice, and Speaker Falgore has ordered that Abdulsalam be officially served with the notice in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The action comes amid growing political tension in Kano following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.

However, Deputy Governor Abdulsalam declined to join the governor in the move, choosing instead to remain with the NNPP.

His decision reportedly widened divisions within the state government, fuelling speculation about his political future and paving the way for the ongoing impeachment process.
