Barcelona secured a fifth straight win in LaLiga by edging Rayo Vallecano 1-0, a result that keeps the Blaugrana at least four points clear of rivals Real Madrid regardless of the outcome of Sunday night’s Madrid derby.
Match Report
Just 50 seconds in, Joan García had to make a save from Carlos Martín after Rayo broke through Barça’s high line with their first move. It then took 10 minutes for the home side to register a shot on target, a weak attempt from Gerard Martín that Augusto Batalla gathered comfortably. Raphinha failed to hit the target after intercepting a pass near the centre circle and getting ahead of Pathé Ciss, while the visitors crowded the midfield and looked to counter quickly whenever possible.
Barça kept searching for a breakthrough and found it in the 24th minute. A well-delivered João Cancelo corner picked out Ronald Araújo at the far post, and his downward header put the hosts in front. They nearly doubled the lead soon after, but Batalla tipped a powerful Raphinha strike onto the crossbar. The game then became scrappy, with frequent fouls interrupting the rhythm. Although Barça remained on top by halftime, they seldom looked close to extending Araújo’s goal.
Three minutes after the restart, Rayo once again got past the offside trap, but Fran Pérez’s cross was easily collected by García. Near the hour mark, Barça increased the tempo, creating a few half-chances that went unfinished. Rayo came close to equalizing when Álvaro García unleashed a strong left-footed effort that was well saved, and the goalkeeper followed up with an acrobatic stop to keep out a header from Unai López.
Barça’s lack of smooth play drew loud whistles from the Camp Nou crowd, and when Rayo broke forward again with four players, tension rose among the home fans. Luckily for the hosts, Pacha Espino sent his shot over the bar. Despite offering little attacking threat late on, Barça held firm to claim their 15th consecutive LaLiga win at Camp Nou, while Rayo’s poor away form (D3, L6) continued.
