Match Report

Blending history with modern flair, the Bernabéu set the stage for a clash between two of the competition’s most decorated sides. The match lived up to its billing early on, with both teams displaying quality across the pitch. Bayern started brightly and were left stunned when Dayot Upamecano failed to make clean contact with Harry Kane’s headed assist from close range. Madrid soon responded with dangerous counterattacks, forcing Manuel Neuer into action to deny Kylian Mbappé after a clever through ball from Arda Güler.

Neuer continued to shine, producing another save from Mbappé before making an even more impressive diving stop to keep out a powerful effort from Vinícius Júnior. Despite those opportunities for the hosts, Bayern’s lead just before halftime felt deserved. A slick, fast-paced move sliced through Madrid’s defence, with Serge Gnabry providing a precise through ball for Luis Díaz to calmly finish.

The visitors struck again almost immediately after the restart, as Michael Olise’s skillful run and pass set up Kane to fire home from the edge of the box within seconds of the second half. Olise nearly added a goal of his own soon after, but Andriy Lunin denied him twice as Madrid gradually grew back into the game.

The hosts were handed a golden chance when Upamecano’s poor clearance fell to Vinícius, but he failed to convert after rounding Neuer, while Mbappé narrowly missed the target with a curling shot. Their persistence finally paid off with 15 minutes left, when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a low cross to Mbappé, who managed to force the ball over the line despite Neuer’s efforts.

Madrid pushed for an equaliser late on, creating several chances, but couldn’t avoid just their second defeat in nine meetings with Bayern. Goals either side of halftime give the German side a clear advantage heading into the second leg, and strengthen their case as early contenders for a seventh Champions League crown.
