Iran must not hold Strait of Hormuz to ransom, Starmer tells Gulf allies

While on his trip to the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Gulf allies that Iran should not “hold the Strait of Hormuz to ransom” according to BBC.

During a regional defence call with representatives from the Gulf countries, Starmer reiterated that the UK had been consistent in its position on the conflict, calling for de-escalation and for a lasting ceasefire.

He said the nations will need to come together to find a solution over the Strait of Hormuz.

Since Iran and the US agreed on a ceasefire, Iran’s IRGC said any ships passing through the strait without its permission would be targeted and “destroyed”, while White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said reports suggesting the strait is closed are false.
