Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended an 18-year-old suspect for allegedly vandalising reflective road safety installations on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The arrest took place on April 6, 2026, at about 17:30 hours, after the suspect was reportedly caught interfering with road studs designed to enhance visibility and guide motorists, particularly at night and during adverse weather conditions.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi.

According to the command, the suspect, identified as Dogara John, was caught while allegedly removing the reflective studs, with a search conducted at the scene leading to the recovery of 20 of the items in his possession.

The police emphasised that the installations are essential for road safety, noting that they assist drivers in navigating properly and help minimise accidents on the busy Third Mainland Bridge.

“These road studs play a vital role in helping drivers stay on course and in preventing accidents, particularly on a busy route like the Third Mainland Bridge,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its position on safeguarding public infrastructure, the command cautioned against acts of vandalism, stressing that such behaviour endangers lives.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, was quoted as reiterating that the command has zero tolerance for the destruction of public property across the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for vandalism and any form of damage to public infrastructure,” the statement read.

He further stated that such actions weaken ongoing safety measures in the state and called for increased public awareness and cooperation.

“He noted that such actions not only endanger lives but also undermine ongoing efforts to maintain safety and order across the state,” it added.

The command also urged residents to report any suspicious activity around public infrastructure through designated emergency lines, noting that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
