Talent manager Ubi Franklin has explained the reasons many men are afraid of court marriages.
In a post on X, Franklin stated that many men avoid legal marriages because they believe assets will be shared equally in the event of a divorce.
He explained that this belief is not entirely accurate, adding that even in customary marriages, a court can award alimony if one spouse meets the required conditions.
Franklin added that another reason men fear legal marriages is that they cannot recover gifts given to a spouse after separation, except when those gifts were given under specific conditions.
He advised that, in some cases, gifts should be purchased in one’s own name or given with clear conditions attached.
“Many men are scared of ‘Court Marriage’ because they have this erroneous fixation that in the event of divorce, property will be shared 50 – 50 ( not legally true). Even in customary marriages, when one of the spouses (whether male or female) meets the conditions for alimony (money), the Court will grant it.
“Secondly, if you give your spouse/girlfriend/ husband, or boyfriend a gift, you cannot recover it in the event of separation, unless it is accompanied by certain conditions. Sometimes buy the gift in your own name or attach conditions to it”, he wrote.
