The Abia State Police Command has arrested three women and rescued two children in connection with an alleged child stealing case.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Akwete Divisional Headquarters in collaboration with community vigilantes after receiving actionable intelligence.

The statement explained that one suspect, Vera Imiobong Udoyang, was arrested with the children and later confessed to luring and stealing them with donuts and soft drinks in Ozoaporo, Okrika, Rivers State.

The suspects have been identified as Vera Imiobong Udoyang (30), Chioma Duru Ukanwoke (40), and Ezinne Ukandu (41), all from Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Abia States respectively.

Investigations reportedly revealed that the act involved a chain of contacts linking the three suspects and an unidentified welfare officer, simply known as “Chioma,” who is currently at large and allegedly coordinated efforts to source male children for illegal adoption.

The police said the three suspects are in custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect.

The statement further confirmed that the rescued children have been reunited with their parents, while investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and warned them against allowing children to accept gifts or follow strangers, adding that suspicious persons should be reported to the nearest police station or emergency hotlines.
